Requirements for Starting a Website

The requirements for starting a website are fairly basic. You will only need a few things:

1. A Good Domain Name

Do you already have a domain name? If not, you'll need to get one. Here are some good guidelines to follow when choosing a domain name:

• Choose a domain name that can easily be remembered by the general public. For example: CompanyName.com

• Try not to use abbreviations in the domain name since this makes the website name harder to remember. For example: CompanyNameIA.com

• Don't make the domain name too long to remember. For example: CompanyNameinIowa.com

• Don't make the domain name too complicated to remember. Just because you will remember it, doesn't mean your customers will. For example: webbusiness4company.com

• Try to use a .com extension. There are many top level domain (TLD) extensions in use but the most common of all is the .com extension - which means it is still the easiest to remember.

2. A Great Website Host with a Reliable Data Center

Your website host will be a factor in the types of websites you can have and the specific applications that your web server can handle. Your website host will be just as important, if not more so, than your website.

If your web server is not using the latest technology, your website could have issues with slow-loading pages, pages not loading at all, errors on pages, and more. And, if you are going to have any kind of interactive website, you'll want to be sure to check out the requirements you'll be using so you know if your hosting company (and your specific website hosting plan) is capable of carrying out all of the applications used in your website. You don't want to have someone design a site for you and then find out later that there will be complications and your website can't function properly.

3. A Website Designer/Developer

If you don't know the technicalities of how to work on your website, you'll need a good website designer or developer to help get you started. Here are some things to think about:

• How often will your website information need to be updated - weekly? monthly? yearly?

  A website that does not get updated will soon become stale and will not get as much website traffic, which (in turn) will reduce the amount of potential sales your business receives.

• Will you be able to perform the updates to your site or will your website designer/developer be doing the updates?

  You'll want to look for a good website designer or developer that you are comfortable with and who takes the time to listen to you. Your website designer or developer will quickly become your best friend since any good website normally has ongoing work to be done, such as with website maintenance and website updates. It is important to know the costs BEFORE getting yourself into a 'website maintenance deal'. Sometimes, the more expensive upfront costs are a much better savings in the long run. It's always best to get references.
